Every four years, two teens from Gavaldon are kidnapped by the Story Master and taken to the School for Good and Evil to fight to take a place in a new fairy tale. Beautiful Sophie is sure she will be selected to become a great princess, and she does all sorts of random acts of kindness to insure she will be selected for The School for Good. One of most kind acts is befriend Agatha, a young girl who lives in a cemetery and had previously been friendless. Sophie is sure Agatha will be kidnapped with herself, but Agatha will be going to The School for Evil. Both girls are kidnapped, but there is a mix-up. The lovely Sophie is sent to The School for Evil, and the man-hating Agatha is sent to The School for Good. How is Sophie to survive Uglification classes? How can Agatha accept that she must find a prince to be successful? As they work together to fix the mistake, they discover that their destiny may not be what either expected. This original new fantasy is innovative and extraordinary. Sophie and Agatha are unique heroines who have a complex and powerful friendship. At times, the girls' antics are hilarious (Sophie leading a beatification movement for The School for Evil), and other times the lessons learned are heartbreaking (Agatha frees a boy who has been transformed into a gargoyle only to witness him murdered by Tedros, the prince who is torn between the two girls). Like traditional fairy tales, this tale is full of great darkness and life-affirming goodness, and with all kinds of plot twists, you will be in for surprise for this fairy tale's happy ending. I am in the middle of the second book of the series, A World Without Princes, and I am just as entranced. I liked this series so much that I purchased it, which I have only done for series like Harry Potter, The Lightning Thief, and Twilight. Does this give you a clue about how popular I think this book will be? Pick it up, and you too will be cheering the characters on.
