In our world, we believe people should be treated the same regardless of skin color because everyone's blood is red; we are the same. What if you lived in a world where the two peoples living there were so different that their blood was different colors? Mare lives in a world where silver blood makes you part of the elite, whose dominance is insured because all Silvers are gifted with powerful, magical gifts. Unfortunately for Mare, she is a red blood, a giftless human whose race is subservient to the Silvers. Without powers, the Reds have no hope of ever being treated fairly. In a fight to save on her friend from certain death, Mare braves the Silver palace and discovers she, a lowly Red, has a power even the Silvers fear. Once discovered, Mare's life is in even more danger. Anyone can betray you, anyone can love you, and anything can happen in a world were cruelty and injustice reign, but Mare will do whatever she can to bring an end to segregation and save her people. This epic new fantasy is full of double-crossing, violence, magic and mystery. Mare is a feisty heroine who is forced to hide her true feelings when her powers are discovered by the world. Her bravery and innocence will draw in readers as they hope, like her, that with her help, the Red Guard, the Red resistance group, will have a chance. I loved the idea that evolution of a species, a mix of Red and Silver, is what may bring justice. Of course, readers will suffer along with the main character because they will have to wait for the next book in the series to learn more. A strong addition to the fantasy canon.

Confess by Colleen Hoover I have a confession to make . . . . Colleen Hoover's innovative, steamy romance is her best work to date! Confess is a story of secret confessions. Owen Gentry is an artist whose work is inspired by secret confessions that people leave for him. Auburn Reed meets him weeks after moving to Dallas when she answers his help wanted sign. She doesn't expect to have an attraction for the first time since she lost her first love. However, Owen has his own secrets, and if they are revealed, they could destroy his and Auburn's chance at love. When you start reading this book, make sure you have a clear schedule because you won't be able to put it down. Hoover has layered this book in bigger and bigger secrets, and it isn't until the final page that the biggest secret is revealed. I was shocked with each new revelation. Owen and Auburn are kind and complex characters, and their connection is honest and steamy. You will cheer and cry as they fight to stay away from each other and also be together. I also love how Colleen collaborated with the artist Danny O'Connor to create color versions of Owen's artwork; how she utilizes real artists adds depth to her stories. This is a book to read and reread! It is a perfect summer romance. Highly, highly recommended. |
