172 Hours on the Moon by Johan Harstad
Most pictures of the man on the moon depict him as a jolly, friendly creature, quietly watching over us. However, what if the man on the moon was not so nice. When NASA decides to renew its mission to the moon, they hype the event by advertising that three teens will travel with the astronauts to the moon. Selected from a world-wide lottery, three teens go to the moon, and once they are there, they find out the man on the moon is really. There is a serious reason why the original moon missions were abandoned, and they will need all their strength and cunning if even one member of the teams is going to make it off the moon alive. I am still haunted by the ending to this atmospheric tale. The man on the moon is very, very bad, and this mission is doomed!

Ask the Dark by Henry Turner
Billy Zeets is the town trouble-maker, and he is the first to admit that there are plenty of reasons why he is not beloved in his home town: the stealing, the fights, the vandalism. Yet, this troublemaker is responsible for stopping a string of kidnappings and murders of boys in his hometown, and if he wasn't so bad, the boys might still be disappearing. At the start of the novel, Billy decides to write down the story of how solved the mystery and survived an encounter with a serial killer who had kidnapped, tortured, and killed boys for many years. Told in Billy's uneducated and raw(#@?*!!!) voice, you will be drawn into the life of boy desperate to make enough money to save his family's house from foreclosure. You will want to turn on the lights as he stumbles into putting together the pieces of the mystery of the missing boys. Fans of serial killer stories like I Hunt Killers will get sucked into this dark and dangerous mystery. Highly recommended.

Bobby is used to trouble: stealing cars, fighting, and staying out all night. To protect her family, Bobby's mom decides to move the family to the country. There they move into a little cottage with a queer history. The last tenant disappeared, leaving all his belongings behind. When Bobby's little brother talks of making a new friend that no one else can see, Bobby and his family learn that small towns can house dark secrets. This a creepy story that confirms all the reasons why people are afraid of living in the country.

The Cemetery Boys by Heather Brewer
In Spencer, Michigan, they have a legend. When bad times come, the only way they can end is for a person to be sacrificed to dark, winged creatures. When Stephen moves to Spencer, his dad's home town, due to their own hard times, Stephen first thinks this legend is a joke. However, the people in town take this legend seriously, and his new crew of friends seem deadly serious about it. Even worse, bad times have hit Spencer again, but how far will Stephen's new friends go to end the bad times? This fast-paced horror story will leave you mistrusting your own judgements about who you can trust and the truth in old stories. Stephen has stepped into the rabbit hole, and he may not make it out alive. I love that this book is not in a series!

The Enemy by Charlie Higson
In the future, a virus hits the earth that either kills people over the age 18 or transforms them into zombies. A group of kids have holed up in supermarket, but as supplies go down, more and more of them are getting picked off as they search for food. They know it is only a matter of time before they are all killed. Then, a new boy arrives promising that if they can make it to Buckingham Palace, they will find a thriving sanctuary. As they set out on the journey to the palace, no one is safe as they Enemy is always lurking. This is my favorite zombie apocalypse series; you cannot put the book down as the kids battle for the lives. Like Game of Thrones, be wary of who you grow attached to because you never know when they might get eaten. The fifth book in the series is coming out this spring. Highly recommended!

Fiendish by Brenna Yovanoff
For the past ten years, Clementine has been magically trapped in a cellar, silenced and forgotten. When a group of local boys decides to explore her charred home, Clementine is discovered and set free. Clementine sets out to discover what happened to her the night her mother was killed and she was entombed, but no one wants to give up their secrets. Not Fisher, the magical and mystery boy who saved her. Not Shiny, her cousin and best friend who managed to survive that night of hatred all those years ago. Not the fiends, who terrify, tease and torment her with the truth. This horrific tale of dark magic, mystery, and romance is strange and intriguing.

The Haunting of Sunshine Girl by Paige McKenzie
How many of you believe in ghosts? I still get chills when a remember a local station to a story about a family whose house was haunted. I remember how the cameramen caught a shadow moving across a room where no shadow should be. It was creepy! When Sunshine and her mom move from Texas to Washington, Sunshine quickly realizes that they are not the only ones living in the house. A laughing little girl keeps moving her stuff, which is annoying but livable. Then one night, another ghost enters her house, and afterwards, Sunshine's mother is changed, likely possessed. With the help of a new friend, Nolan, Sunshine must figure out who she is and how she can save her mother from a spirit who is trying to destroy them all. Although I have never watched the YouTube series that this book is based on, this ghost story with a twist was a riveting read. Sure to be a series, you can enjoy this book on its own, but you will want to read more about the secrets of her past and possibilities for her future. Highly recommended!

I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga
As a kid, we learn about the world from our parents, and what we learn from them influences our own views. Unfortunately for Jaz, his dad is the most notorious serial killer alive today, and his dad savagely taught him that life is worthless. Since his dad was caught, Jaz has been forced to prove that he values life. However, as a new set of murders that mimic his father's crimes start happening in town, Jazz joins in on the case to prove the town once and for all that he is not like his father. However, he has to decide for himself if he values human life or despises it. This twisted tale of death and revenge will horrify and transfix you. The second book in the series The Game also has received rave reviews, except for frustration about the cliffhanger ending.

Lockdown: Escape from Furnace by Alexander Gordon Smith
Welcome to hell! Hell is Furnace Prison. A prison located one mile beneath the surface of the earth and designed to house the most dangerous juvenile offenders. In Furnace Prison, the prison guards are not quite human, and you never know when someone is going to disappear never to be seen again. Alex is being sent to Furnace Prison because he was convicted of murdering his best friend. Although he has been in trouble with the law before, this time he is innocent; he did not kill his best friend. However, how do you escape hell? And if Alex can't figure out how to do it, then he will be the next one to disappear. This is the most popular series for guys at my library. Shocking twists, grotesque characters, and non-stop action make this five book series a winner for even those who despise reading.

The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey
Will Henry is the assistant to the monstrumologist. A person who studies the creatures that are not supposed to exist but do. When they discover a pod of evil creatures that live to devour human flesh, they must work feverishly to save the town and destroy the pod. Let's just say, the clean up gets very messy. The blood is literally dripping off the walls in this gruesome gothic tale. Think Edgar Allan Poe with a lot more blood. This is by far the scariest, most disgusting book I have ever read, and I loved every page. With this book, I discovered that I may not like to watch scary movies, but I can enjoy reading frightening books.

The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff
Mackie may live in the human world, but he is not one of us. He is a "replacement," a changeling left in place of a stolen human child. Although his mother has despised him his entire life, Mackie survived because his "adopted" sister loved and cared for him. Mackie would love to always live above ground, but the human world is killing him. He is becoming dangerously allergic to iron, blood and consecrated ground. When his friend Tate's sister is taken, Mackie chooses to head underground to his real home to fight the Queen to bring the girl back alive. As he does this, he learns that his town is built on generations of darkness. Yovanoff creates a dark and imaginative underworld filled with bizarre creatures and horrifying realities. You can feel yourself getting forever lost and hopeless as more dark truths are revealed. Just as Mackie gets lost in dark and horror-filled underworld of Mayhem, you will find yourself searching for a ray of hope. This has the dark feel of Labyrinth without the musical numbers.

Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Maberry
Benny has spent his entire life dreaming of becoming a zombie hunter. He can't wait to begin cutting down zombies and protecting the town from evil. However, he is not happy to be training as a zombie hunter from his brother, Tom. Although Tom is well-respected, Benny despises him for leaving their parents to be overtaken by the zombie horde. When Benny finally gets a chance start hunting zombies, he learns that hunting zombies is not just about hacking them up. Moreover, the hunters he has spent his life idolizing may be more monstrous than the creatures they destroy. His black and white world is suddenly full of gray, and he has to decide where he stands. This is another fantastic zombie series with all four books in the series available. This is a case where the zombies are frightening, but they are less scary than most of the humans who are hunting them.

Sythe by Neal Shusterman
Neal Shusterman's stunning novel, Scythe, is set in future world where they have cured death. If you get a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis, they can cure you. If you get hit by a bus, they can put you back together. Whatever happens, they can bring you back. Of course, with no one dying and everyone having babies, the world would quickly become overpopulated. Therefore, the world's leaders came together and created scythes. These are people who decide who is to be killed and not brought back. The scythe's live by a set of commandments very different from our own. #1: Thou shalt kill. #2: Thou shalt kill with no bias, bigotry, or malice aforethought. #3: Thou shalt grant an annum of immunity to the beloved of those who accept your coming. (This means if you do not resist your death, your family will have one year of protection from death.) #4. Thou shalt kill the beloved of those who resist. (If you fight death, the scythes will kill you and all you love.) This is the story of teens who have been chosen to be trained as scythes. As they get deeper in their training, they discover that when humans play god, bad things happen. I read this book over a year ago, and somehow, I never blogged about it even though it was one of the best books I had read in ages. Shusterman is the Willy Wonka of the teen literature world as he creates innovative plots in a world where there tends to be a lot of repetition. Prepare to be shocked and spellbound as you are sucked into this futuristic world where getting our greatest wish, a freedom from death, causes even greater suffering. The sequel, Thunderhead, was just published, and it has received rave reviews from my students. My students devour Scythe like candy and beg for more. I join them in saying, "Neal Shusterman, please, please keep writing your amazing novels!" Highly recommended!

Along the journey, everything Jebel believed about himself, his country, and other humans is put to the test by monstrous creatures, suicide cults, cannibals, and cunning humans. If he survives the journey it will be worth it if he can become the thin executioner. This bloody retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn will shock and horrify. Jebel meets many monstrous men, but the novel becomes more fascinating as Jebel realizes how monstrous his own people are.

Victor Frankenstein is famous for bringing to life his grotesque creation Frankenstein. However, how did he become interested in reanimation of human life? This novel explores Victor's life as a teenager. He is a beloved son, twin brother, and friend. When his brother is overtaken by a mysterious illness, Victor will do anything to help him get better, and he decides to dabble with alchemy to create a potion that will restore his brother's help. As he and his friends gather the ingredients to the potion, they must each decide if the potion is worth the cost. The gothic novel pulls you into Victor's world, and like him, you cannot get out without a terrible price to be paid.

Josh is the most dangerous zombie hunter. Alright, he is the second most dangerous, and the zombie hunting is only in the virtual world. When Charlie, the leading zombie hunter, asks him to play an IRL version of the game, Josh is stoked. When he meets Charlie and discovers that he is actually a cute and sassy girl, Josh is even more excited. The live action games they play are so real that Josh almost thinks the zombies are real, and the Z he and Charlie take me the experience even more powerful. However, when members of his team start disappearing, Josh realizes the games they have been playing are more real than he was led to believe, He and his friends are going to have to play the game of their lives if they are going to survive. When I started this book, I could not put it down. The fast-paced zombie novel is disgusting and fantastic! I also love that it is a stand-alone title.
