A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
Prince Rhen is cursed to repeat his 18th year over and over again until he finds a girl who will fall in love with him. It seemed easy at first to break the curse, but at the end of each season, he transforms until a mindless beast. Now Rhen must live with the guilt that he has killed his entire family and most of his court while in beast form. No girl has loved this beast, but Rhen, desperate to save his kingdom from himself, continues to kidnap a girl each season in hopes that one will be different. He never expected to find a girl like Harper.
A lifetime of tough luck has taught Harper to be strong, even though everyone underestimates her because she has cerebral palsy. While trying to stop a kidnapping, Harper ends up being the one chosen to go to Rhen's world. A world of magic and chivalry seems absurd to Harper, but as she meets Rhen's people, she discovers they are just as real as she is. Harper is torn between wanting to get back home to her dying mother and wanting to do what she can to help Rhen's people and save him from this curse. With the time running out, how can this Beauty and her Beast find a happy ending?
Within the pages of this book lies the one of best re-imaginings of the Beauty and the Beast story, and like a beast, you will want to devour this book. Both Harper and Rhen are complex characters that fiercely fight for the people they love. I love that Kemmerer's main character has CP, but the book is not about CP. I also loved the idea of a beast who truly becomes an inhuman monster. With no control over his actions, it makes the consequences even more heartbreaking. The romance between Harper and Rhen is swoon-worthy, and at the end, you will be dying to for the sequel, A Heart So Fierce and Broken, which comes out January 7, 2020. Highly, highly recommended!

Alanna the First Adventure by Tamora Pierce
Alanna and Alan are twins. She is to be sent to become a lady, and Alan is to learn to become a night. Neither are happy with their fate, so they decide to change it. Alanna dresses as a boy and heads to the king's castle to train to become a knight, and her brother head's off to learn to be a mage. Life as a page in the palace is tough, but Alanna's honesty, charm, and humor make her a favorite of both the crown prince and prince of thieves. As the life of her prince and king is threatened, Alanna must master her skills with the sword and magic to save her friends. This is my favorite fantasy/adventure series. Alanna is the girl I want to be: spunky, honest, tough, funny, kind and kick-butt! She beats the boys in boys games, and she follows her heart as well. Every lover of fantasy needs to read the first of Tamora Pierce's novels. This is the first in a quartet of books, and the adventure gets better in each one.

Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian
When Theodosia was six years old, she was forced to watch as her country was overtaken and her mother, the queen, was assassinated. For the past ten years, she has survived by pretending to be subservient to the new king by quietly submitting to his cruel games. Now 16, she is reunited with her childhood best friend, a rebel who convinces her to fight for her people before they fade away forever. To protect her country, she agrees to kill the crown prince, a young man who is the opposite of his father and seems to be falling for her. As her feelings grow confusing, Theodosia must struggle to decide how far she is willing to go to reclaim her legacy and protect her people. I loved the first installment in this new fantasy series. I was intrigued with the magic of the realm, which was housed in special gems, and hoarded by the invaders. I cheered for Theodosia as she fought against years of abuse and humiliation to find her power and freedom, and I am excited to see where her heart will follow. Recommended!

The Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas
Iolanthe is the most powerful elemental mage in many generations. When Prince Titus discovers her, he tells her that she is prophesied to be the only one able to destroy the Bane, the powerful wizard controlling their kingdom, Iolanthe does not want to die for a cause she is not passionate about, but she agrees to help the prince in order to save her former caretaker. Masquerading as a boy at a private boys school, Iolanthe and Titus begin to depend on each other. As the servants of the Bane get closer to discovering their plot, Titus will have to decide if he can use the girl he loves an instrument of revenge. Magic, fast-paced action, sinister plots, and an unwanted romance, this book is the epitome of a great fantasy. Two books are to follow, and I hope they will be out soon.

You are invited to Caraval, a legendary competition whose winner receives a wish as their prize. Run by the mysterious magician Legend, players have five nights to solve a series of clues in a world where you don't know who to trust and what is real. Scarlett Dragna has dreamed of attending the magnificent Caraval with her sister since they were small girls, but years of unanswered letters to Legend finally made her give up on her dreams. Weeks before Scarlett's arranged marriage, their invitation to Caraval finally arrives, and her sister forces her to attend. The night Scarlett arrives at Caraval, her sister goes missing, and Scarlett now has five days to retrieve her. In a world where Scarlett does not know what is real or who to trust, she must learn to trust herself if she is to find her sister and win her wish. This lush and opulent descriptions, unique characters, and twisting plot makes this the best fantasy offering of this year. Just like Scarlett, you will find yourself lost in a world that you don't know what is real and what is fantasy, but you will enjoy each step and misstep as you fight to find the end. Highly recommended.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
For the past six years, Simon Snow has valiantly fought to destroy the Insidious Humdrum, the creature with his face that is sucking the magic out of the world. Simon knows that the final battle is coming, and he is not prepared. Simon's magical powers may be huge, but he still can't control it. His mentor, the Mage, wants him to run away and hide. His girlfriend broke up with him. Even worse, Baz, his talented, gorgeous and evil roommate, is missing, and Simon is going crazy without Baz to follow, fear and fight. It is never easy being the Chosen One, but with his selfless diligence, Simon may stop the great evil destroying the world he loves and discover a love that will sustain him in his darkest hour. Baz and Simon's relationship will leave your heart achingly full. This novel brings to life the fictional fantasy that her Fangirl main character Cath was obsessed with with. Just like the readers were intrigued by Simon's story, Rainbow also felt that his story needed to be told. The results are achingly beautiful. This may be Rowell's only fantasy, but if you love Rainbow's witty banter, anguished romances, and flawed-yet-wondrous characters, you will fall in love with this book as well. Highly recommended!

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
Orisha was land created by the gods. Some humans were gifted with powers and called magis; each magi's gift depended on the powers (air, wind, etc.) of the god who bestowed it. For generations, magi used their powers to help humanity, but when the Orishan king became frightened of the magi's power, he decided to wipe them out. On the day known as "The Raid," every living magician was murdered, and the connection to magic was severed completely. Now the children born with magic potential, known as diviners and born with white hair that is impossible to hide, are called maggots and constantly fear for their lives.
Zelie's mother was a Reaper, a magi who controlled death. At age six, she watched the king's guards murder her mother during "The Raid." Born a diviner, Zelie has no rights and must constantly work to control her anger as she watches the repression of her people. Zelie is strong and outspoken, which always gets her in trouble. When a young girl with the key to unlocking magic begs her help, she knows it is dangerous but doesn't hesitate to protect her. The girl happens to be the king's daughter, Amari. Her theft sends them on a dangerous journey to bring back magic, with Amari's brother, Prince Inan, hot on their trail. The prince abhors magic, and he will stop at nothing to please his father and eradicate magic. With the future of magic in her hands, Zelie cannot afford to make mistakes. However, decisions are not black and white, especially when the human heart is involved.
Not only is Children of Blood and Bone the best new fantasy of 2018, it is also a groundbreaking addition to teen fantasy. Just like the recent Black Panther movie, this book is written by an African American author, telling an African story, with all black characters and themes that tie to the continued violence against black young men, and everyone will be enthralled by its superb storytelling. Every teen fantasy fan needs to read this phenomenal novel. Adeyemi's characters are unique, strong, yet flawed, and you cannot help cheering for them as the struggle to make their world a better place. Zelie and Amari are stunning as they grow to become the warriors of their destiny. The magic is powerful and fantastical, and Adeyemi's writing makes it feel authentic. As a fantasy fan and a supporter of diverse literature, I have been waiting and waiting for this book to be written, and now that it is, I just can't wait for the next one in the series. Highly, highly recommended!

Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
Even though Feyre is the youngest daughter in her family, she is the one responsible for making sure her family is fed and sheltered after her mother dies. While out hunting in the woods, she kills a fantastically large wolf, and the next night, a terrifying beast demands retribution because she killed one of the fair folk. As payment, she agrees to spend the rest of her day's at his home in the treacherous, magical land of the faerie, filled with creatures who once enslaved humans. Once back at his him, the creature transforms to Tamlin, one of the terrifying and beautiful faerie lords. Although his lands are filled with dangerous creatures, Feyre finds that he and his people are not what she expected. Here she finds kindness, freedom, and passion. However, a deadly disease has spread across the faerie lands, and if this blight is unchecked, humans will suffer as well. When Feyre learns about the true nature of the evil, she will need great courage to fight to protect those she loves from its horror. I devoured Maas' latest series about a girl who can't trust her senses and instead must trust her heart. Filled with great treachery, terrible riddles, fiery passion, and unexpected kindnesses, I marveled at the depth of this tale of magic and mystery. Feyre is a prickly, tough, and tenacious heroine, and you will celebrate as discovers the truth about herself and the faerie people and fights for those she loves. Highly recommended!

Defy by Sara B. Larson
In order to escape a fate worse than death, Alexa pretends to be a boy and fights in the King's army. Alex has become such a fierce fighter that she has been assigned to personally protect the spoiled Prince Damian. When she, Prince Damian, and her fellow soldier Rylan are kidnapped, Alex is terrified that her secret will be revealed. Then she learns that she is not the only one keeping secrets. As a super-fan of Tamora Pierce, I love a good fantasy with a female who can kick butt, and Alex is just the dangerous and defiant female that I appreciate.

Demon King series by Cinda Williams Chima
Some people are born to trouble. No matter where they go or what they do, trouble follows them. This is definitely true for Han Alistair. Going from a thief lord to a trader of black-market goods, Han is a tough fighter with many friends who works hard to provide for his mother and sister. When he acquires a magical amulet that belonged to the infamous Demon KIng, Han finds himself in a battle for his life and the life of his friends. At the same time, Raisa, heir to the Fells throne, is fighting her own battles to protect her country from her mother's foolish plans. As the Han and Raisa's paths intersect, secrets of the past and present will shake both their worlds. All four books of this quartet are available, and I LOVED the ending of the series. You just can't help but root for Han and Raisa, and you get pulled into their web of secrets, forbidden love, honor, sorcery, and battle. I could read this series over and over again.

Dividing Eden by Joelle Charbonneau
Who better to stab you in the back than the people who know you best, you family. Twins, Carys and Andreus, were never destined to rule their kingdom of Eden, but after their father, the king, and their older brother are killed, these two are forced to fight for the crown. From childhood, they have been best friends who have carefully protected each other's secret weaknesses. With the crown on the line, all bets are off. Now, they will see how far they are willing to go protect their kingdom and secure the crown. This dark and dysfunctional fantasy will have you all twisted up as you decide which twin would be the best ruler. It is terrible to watch how low people are willing to go to secure power. This is an exciting start to a dark new fantasy series that fans of Game of Thrones are sure to love.

Dragonfly by Julia Golding
Princess Taoshira of the Blue Crescent Islands is being forced to wed to Prince Ramil or Gerfal in order to stop a powerful warlord from destroying both their countries. Both are furious about the marriage, and neither will do anything to help the other. When they are both kidnapped, they will be forced to work together and trust each other if they will have a chance of escaping. The verbal and physical sparring between the prince and princess is sharp and hilarious, and their misadventures while being kidnapped are exciting. I loved this book! This is a rollicking story, and it has a companion novel, The Glass Swallow.

The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan
This is reigning standard of adult fantasy series. I read this series because as student was addicted to it, and I proceeded to get my husband, father-in-law, and many others addicted as well. This fourteen book series is about a group of teens who find out the stories they were told as children are real and that each one of them has a powerful role to play in the destruction or survival of their world. Filled with intrigue, magic, battles, and romance, this series will pull you into another world and make you want to stay there. This is a must-read for all fantasy fans.

Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes
Mytica was once a land filled with magic, containing three peaceful kingdoms. Now fairy tales and nightmaresare coming to life, and the people are going to suffer. Get to the heart of what is happening from the perspectives of four very different teens: Cleo - a spoiled princess who will face great danger to protect the sister she loves dearly; Jonas - a rebel focused on revenge after the murder of his older brother; Lucia - a powerful sorceress fighting to hide her skills from a land that abhors magic; and Lucian - a prince who has been trained by his father to be merciless but whose heart yearns for a different world. Destiny will bring these four together as their worlds are continuously being reshaped by destiny. The fourth book is coming out next December, and I cannot wait! It is a tale that will appeal to fans of the Game of Thrones series. Although a bit slow until the main characters lives connect, the narrative speeds up as fate brings them together. I love that each teen has great flaws and great promise. A great darkness is coming, but will they be ready?

Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta
For the past ten years, Finnikin has been shut out of his beloved home country of Lumatere due to a dark curse after the royal family is slaughtered. Although he desperately misses home, Finnikin has come to believe that he and Lumatere refugees will never see home again until a young girl named Evanjalin says that the heir to the throne is alive. As Finnikin and Evanjalin work together to restore the King's guard and locate the heir to the throne, Finnikin learns that Evanjalin is not who he believed. It will take great courage within himself and in her if they will be able to free Lumatere. The first in a three book series (#2 - Froi of the Exiles and #3 Quintana of Charyn), this is a realistic fantasy that deals honestly with horrors of refugees, mobs, and war. Every book is a exquisitely crafted treasure with flawed, fantastic characters. Amazing!

Unsure of who she should trust, Lyra must trust her instincts if she to save her friend and learn the secrets of the "Dust." This book is one of the most thought-provoking fantasties available. Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers
Ismae is able to escape a life of abuse and degradation when she is helped to the convent of St. Mortain. There she learns she is the daughter of Death and is trained as an assassin. For her first assignment, she is sent to court to determine if the brother of the Queen is to be trusted or eliminated. What she does not plan on is what do when her heart tells her something different than the Sisters. It is easy to get pulled into this tale of courtly intrigue and romance. The gorgeous prose makes you feel a part of the world of old Brittany, and you will root for this fair assassin. A part of a three book series.

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert
For seventeen years, Alice Prosperine and her mother lived a vagabond existence, constantly moving due to the bad luck that always seemed to follow them. When Alice's grandmother, the reclusive writer of the dark and terrible Tales of the Hinterland, passes away on her mysterious estate, known as The Hazel Wood, Alice's mother is sure their luck has changed. It has, but unfortunately, it got worse. When Alice's mother is kidnapped, she starts to discover that her grandmother's twisted tales may be more than just stories. If Alice wants to reclaim her mother, she will have to find the one place her mother warned her never to go, The Hazel Wood. There she will discover her story is even more terrible than she could imagine. I devoured this dark and twisty stand-alone fantasy about a girl in search of her story. The language was biting and frightening, and I was as mesmerized as the fans who loved the difficult-to-find tales written by Althea Prosperine, Alice's grandmother. This is a fantastic addition for those who love a dark fantasy, and I like it even better knowing that there will be a book two.

The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
Due to the assassination of the former Queen, Princess Kelsea has been raised in seclusion and exile. There she has been trained to become a wise Queen who can defend herself. On her 19th birthday, she is taken from her teachers, the only people she has known, to become Queen. Along with her training, she has the Tearling sapphire to protect her. However, she has no idea how to rule a country, develop the loyalty of a people who do not know or trust her, right the wrongs that has been done in her name or stay alive during many assassination attempts. Kelsea feels responsible to save her kingdom, and she stubbornly refuses to give up or give in when faced with numerous challenges. As her courage and integrity begin to move her people, she will still need magic to protect her dreams. I read this book because I learned that Emma Watson would be starring in the theatrical version, which is still in development. Again, I was pleased to find a fantasy with a tough girl who does not let fear rule her. Kelsea is naive yet highly educated, and she must trust her instincts as she works to build a loyal guard. Filled with mysterious men, I appreciated that Kelsea had no time for romance in the first book of this series. I can't wait for the next installment to find out more about . . . (If I told you, it would be cheating!) Highly recommend!

Red Queen by Vicotria Aveyard
In our world, we believe people should be treated the same regardless of skin color because everyone's blood is red; we are the same. What if you lived in a world where the two peoples living there were so different that their blood was different colors? Mare lives in a world where silver blood makes you part of the elite, whose dominance is insured because all Silvers are gifted with powerful, magical gifts. Unfortunately for Mare, she is a red blood, a giftless human whose race is subservient to the Silvers. Without powers, the Reds have no hope of ever being treated fairly. In a fight to save on her friend from certain death, Mare braves the Silver palace and discovers she, a lowly Red, has a power even the Silvers fear. Once discovered, Mare's life is in even more danger. Anyone can betray you, anyone can love you, and anything can happen in a world were cruelty and injustice reign, but Mare will do whatever she can to bring an end to segregation and save her people. This epic new fantasy is full of double-crossing, violence, magic and mystery. Mare is a feisty heroine who is forced to hide her true feelings when her powers are discovered by the world. Her bravery and innocence will draw in readers as they hope, like her, that with her help, the Red Guard, the Red resistance group, will have a chance. I loved the idea that evolution of a species, a mix of Red and Silver, is what may bring justice. Of course, readers will suffer along with the main character because they will have to wait for the next book in the series to learn more. A strong addition to the fantasy canon.

When rithmatists from Joel's school start disappearing, Joel's passion for rithmatics allows him to be part of the investigation. A mix of math and magic makes this an intriguing fantasy series.

The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani
Every four years, two teens from Gavaldon are kidnapped by the Story Master and taken to the School for Good and Evil to fight to take a place in a new fairy tale. Beautiful Sophie is sure she will be selected to become a great princess, and she does all sorts of random acts of kindness to insure she will be selected for The School for Good. One of most kind acts is befriend Agatha, a young girl who lives in a cemetery and had previously been friendless. Sophie is sure Agatha will be kidnapped with herself, but Agatha will be going to The School for Evil. Both girls are kidnapped, but there is a mix-up. The lovely Sophie is sent to The School for Evil, and the man-hating Agatha is sent to The School for Good. How is Sophie to survive Uglification classes? How can Agatha accept that she must find a prince to be successful? As they work together to fix the mistake, they discover that their destiny may not be what either expected. This original new fantasy is innovative and extraordinary. Sophie and Agatha are unique heroines who have a complex and powerful friendship. At times, the girls' antics are hilarious (Sophie leading a beatification movement for The School for Evil), and other times the lessons learned are heartbreaking (Agatha frees a boy who has been transformed into a gargoyle only to witness him murdered by Tedros, the prince who is torn between the two girls). Like traditional fairy tales, this tale is full of great darkness and life-affirming goodness, and with all kinds of plot twists, you will be in for surprise for this fairy tale's happy ending. I am in the middle of the second book of the series, A World Without Princes, and I am just as entranced. I liked this series so much that I purchased it, which I have only done for series like Harry Potter, The Lightning Thief, and Twilight. Does this give you a clue about how popular I think this book will be? Pick it up, and you too will be cheering the characters on.

Six of Crows & Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
This is the story of one of the greatest heists of all time. Kaz Brekker, a young criminal mastermind, knows anything can happen for the right price. When he is challenged to get into an impenetreble fortress for an outrageous amount of money, Kaz knows the job will be dangerous and difficult. However, with the right team, he knows he can accoomplish the impossible. His team is made up of an unlikely group of misfits: a deadly spy, an unlikely sharpshooter, an angry convict, a powerful magician, and an inexperienced runaway. If they can figure out how to work together, their mission will not only make them rich beyond their wildest dream, but also, it will save their world. If not, their futures and future of humanity is bleak. Although I did not love Badrugo's first series, I fell in love with this one because I loved the characters she created in this world. Each of them are struggling to overcome their tragic history, and ironically, it is only through their criminal work that each of them finds redemption and hope. Of course, my favorites are the mercilessly cunning Kaz and the deadly spy Inej. The sequel, Crooked Kingdom, mastefully completes the tale. A brilliantly woven story, I highly recommend this series.

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young
Although Vikings committed atrocious crimes, a fascinating new piece of information has been discovered that shows they may have been brutal but they were feminists. Viking women fought alongside men. This is the story of one such warrior. In the great battle with their rival clan, Eelyne discovers that the brother she believed was dead is not fighting for the enemy. When she is captured by this enemy, Eelyne has to reconsider everything she has been taught was true if she and her way of life are going to survive. I loved this fierce tale of battle, belief, and transformation. Eelyne is a brutal and poweful fighter, like Wonder Woman but more vicious. the battle scenes are bloody, and the relationship are messy. You can't help being fascinating by this fascinating and original tale. Highly recommended!

The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski
The winner's curse is phenomenon in auctions where the bidder overpays, never able to recoup their losses for the item. In this book, a girl named Kestrel is cursed when she pays a huge sum for a defiant slave based on their combined love of music. In doing this, a girl respected for her knowledge of secrets and strategy falls prey to powers of the human heart. In Kestrel's world, women must join the military or get married by age 20; no other option is allowed. Certainly, the general's daughter cannot fall in love with a slave, but she cannot stop herself, even when the slave fights destroy everything she holds dear. I loved Kestrel's contradictory nature. She relished her knowledge and skill at creating unbeatable war strategies, but she refused to kill. She hated slavery but owned slaves. Kestrel knew everything about secrets and strategy, but she was naive about falling in love. Equally, I appreciated the slave Arin's struggle as he came to love the girl whose father enslaved his people. I was transfixed as I sped through the tale trying to find out not only if Arin's people could be freed but if both Kestrel and Arin would fight for their heart's desire. When I finished The Winner's Curse, I was so angry at the ending. I read and reread the ending searching for more. Certainly an author so adept at making me fall in love with her protagonists would not be so cruel as to end the story as it was. Thankfully, Goodreads told me this book is the first in a trilogy, and I breathed a sigh of relief. For the first time in a long time, I am so happy to learn that this book is the first book in a trilogy. Lately, I am exhausted by the unending supply of series books; sometimes it feels like there is no originality. However, this book is no winner's curse; readers who take a risk on this original tale will come out ahead. I highly recommend it.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
Dreams are powerful things. Since he was five years old, Lazlo Strange, orphan and jr. librarian, has dreamed of finding the mythical city of Weep. He has spent his life collecting every scrap of evidence to understand the city and prove its existence - in hopes of someday traveling there. The only problem is the orphaned, penniless Lazlo has no chance of securing funds for such an expedition. Then, one day his dream comes to him. A group of legendary heroes, the Taizerkane Warriors from Weep, arrive at his library looking for brave souls willing to travel with them to face Weep's greatest problem. They are led by a man known as the Godslayer, and Lazlo can't believe his dream is within his grasp. With all the learned people competing to be a part of the select team, Lazlo knows he doesn't stand a chance of being selected. However, if he doesn't speak up for his dream now, he will regret it all of his days. For now, he has a chance of visiting the city of his dreams and learning from the warriors he always revered. Dreams are powerful things, and Lazlo's dreams will change the world forever. The secrets of Weep are many, and Lazlo is willing to do anything to understand them. Once again, Taylor's master of language, world-building and character come together to create a tragic and magical story that will haunt you. Lazlo is an unlikely hero, but you will root for him and the blue girl from his dreams. It is a book that grows in depth and beauty with each page, and at the end, you will cry out for the next installment. Highly recommended!

The Wrath & the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh
Everyone has heard the story of Scheherazade and the 1000 Arabian nights, of how each night she weaves stories for the murderous king to prevent her own execution. However, did you ever wonder why the king killed all those girls? The Wrath and the Dawn attempts to answer this question in a retelling of the story. In this tale, Shahrzad volunteers to marry the murderous Khaled in hopes of finding a way to assassinate him for killing her dearest friend. Her stories do keep her alive, but as she grows closer to Khaled, she realizes that he is not the devil she imagined. He is being driven to commit his crimes. As Khaled and Shahrzad both attempt to defy fate and find love, dark forces threaten all they hold dear. Just as Shahrzad's stories hypnotize the king, this lush and exotic fantasy will draw in readers. The characters and plot are multi-layered and fascinating. This re-imagining of a classic tale will delight new readers.
