The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
When the aliens came, they weren't as we planned. They weren't green martians with glassy black eyes flying around in disk-like ships, and they definitely weren't gentle and homely like ET. These invaders turned our world against us, wore our skin to deceive us, and left us decimated and unable to trust. As Cassie, one of the last free humans, struggles to stay alive and find her brother, the capable and mysterious Evan Walker arrives to help her survive a deadly attack. The more Cassie learns about him, she is certain she should not trust him, but her heart disagrees. When he promises to help her locate her brother, Cassie must decide if fear or hope will lead her. The action in this book is nonstop as you, like Cassis, are unsure of who to trust. This book looks to have the power of The Hunger Games, and fans of this series will devour this book. It is original and amazing!

In the future, there is no Bill of Rights. There are only the Moral Statues. There is only religion is the Church of america, immoral books are banned, and traditional families and gender roles are enforced. If you don't follow the rules, you may be the next person to disappear. As Ember has watched students from her school disappear, she does her best to fit in and hide that she does not have a dad. When the police do come to take her and her mother away, they are led by Chase, her first love. Incarcerated and separated from her mother, Ember must find the strength to fight for their lives. This dystopian is a frightening look at what would happen if we bowed to conservative demands of one religion, censorship, and traditional families and gender roles, and this future is terrifying. It is a world similar to the Taliban's rule. This series is powerful because the future depicted here seems all-too-possible.

Alex is hiking in the woods to say goodbye to her dead parents and to say goodbye to life. A malignant tumor has taken over her brain, and Alex has very little time to live. While in the woods, and EMP hits, and the world is changed. Nothing electronic works. Millions were killed by the pulse, and thousands more are changed. Alex adopts Ellie, a young girl whose grandfather died, and Tom, a young soldier, and they struggle together to survive. As humanity scrambles to survive, Alex and her friends will face great danger as they struggle to decide who to trust and how to best stay alive. This tauntly written dystopian is a gruesome novel of survival that fans of The Walking Dead will appreciate. In the face of great hardship, you most often see the worst of humanity, and Alex will face dark times. Interestingly, the tumor that was destroying her may be her salvation. The final book of the series is still not out.

Blood Red Road by Moira Young
Saba had always promised her twin brother that if they were separated, she would find him. When her brother is taken and her father is killed, Saba summons up her courage and her hated little sister and will not stop until she gets her brother back. Saba always thought her brother was braver than her, but her will to survive and save her brother is great. She learns she is an unbeatable fighter, cunning opponent, and stubborn survivor. She also learns that the help of friends and family can make the difference between success and failure. Told in Saba's uneducated vernacular, which I loved, this trilogy is one of my favorite dystopian series. I read all three titles, which I am rarely able to do. Saba is so tough yet also so innocent, and her romance with Jack is reminiscent of Indiana Jones and Marian.

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
A terrible virus has ravaged all children. The few that have survived are changed. All of them have some type of psychic power. Some can communicate telepathically, some can move things with their minds, some can control fire, and the most feared, labeled oranges, can control the thoughts and actions of those around them. Instead of the celebrating their abilities, the government fears these new gifted children, and they send them to camps. These are not fun summer camps; these camps are reminiscent of concentration camps. Students cannot speak with each or use their gifts, and students, especially those with dangerous gifts, often go missing and are never seen again. Ruby is an orange, and to survive, she has tricked her captors into believing she has a lesser gift. When she finally gets a chance to escape, takes it. Once outside, can she and other gifted teens ever find a way to bring down the current system and live in peace? Can Ruby learn to control her ability? Once everyone finds out about her gift, will she be feared and hated? I loved this X-Men-like dystopian where everyone has psychic powers, and I was haunted by how much the camps felt like death camps. The images are haunting. Though imperfect, this dystopian is fantastic.

Divergent by Veronica Roth
I loved book one. It is a fascinating premise about having to choose family based on character traits. Tris is a heroine who is the epitome of bravery, and Four is a hero that will make you feel safe. Their romance that will make you swoon. l liked book two. The story diverged in interesting ways. I hated book three. I am still pouting about the ending.

Dry by Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman
Feeling thirsty? For most of us in America, a clean and free glass of water is steps away. But what would happen if you turned on your faucet and nothing came out? Would you know where to get water? What would you or anyone be willing to do quench their thirst when the pipes go dry? Shusterman's sci-fi thriller explores how society would combust if the pipes in millions of Southern California homes went dry. Written from a variety of perspectives, you will watch the crisis unfold from they experience of many. You become closest to Alyssa, her younger brother Garrett, and her next door neighbor Kelton as they struggle to find a safe haven and water as the their world falls apart. I listened to this book, which is read by a variety of voice actors, including the Shustermans, and it was of the best audiobooks I have ever listened to. The voice actors perfectly matched their characters. I also love that this book is a stand-alone; no waiting another year for next installment. Anyone who reads this book will not only be pulled in by the thrilling story of survival, but they will think more seriously about the water they are using and wasting. Once again, Neal Shusterman knocks it out of the park. Highly, highly recommended!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Katniss Everdee - one of the most kick-ass heroines of all time. President Snow - the most evil villain. Prim and Rue -the sweetest innocents. Peeta - a boy filled with kindness and love. The Hunger Games - the most twisted and terrifying reality TV show. The book - Best dystopian ever. Enough said.

Inhuman by Kat Falls
After a terrible mutation took over much of the of the Eastern United States, a wall was built to separate the "safe" humans from those taken by genetic mutations that have given them animal characteristics. Lane never desired to see this feral land, but when she finds out her father is a Fetch, a person who travels the Savage Zone to retrieve artifacts, who is stuck on the inside. She agrees to face the dangerous unknown to save him. With the help of Rafe, a boy she is not sure she can trust, she finds that this world is nothing like she imagined. This richly imaginative take on future human/animal mutation was fascinating. Falls does a great job building suspense as Lane looks to find her father and a local killer. Now I just want to know when book 2 is going to go out.

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
Goodreads writes, "Prentisstown isn't like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts in an overwhelming, never-ending stream of Noise. Just a month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd and his dog, Manchee -- whose thoughts Todd can hear too, whether he wants to or not -- stumble upon an area of complete silence. They find that in a town where privacy is impossible, something terrible has been hidden -- a secret so awful that Todd and Manchee must run for their lives. But how do you escape when your pursuers can hear your every thought?" This brilliant book is tough to sum up, and I don't feel I could do better than Goodreads in this instance. I will add that I love this dystopian trilogy as much as The Hunger Games. Written in Todd's uneducated vernacular, you learn of a dark world where nothing being secret has corrupted most men. Todd is the last innocent, but how long will that last as he is on the run for his life and fighting to protect the last bit of good in his world. I love how the print font changes as Todd experiences the "noise." Good and evil collide in a powerful series. Highly recommended.

For years, they have searched for an escape through the maze, but no one has found a way out. Also, their are terrible insect-like creatures that attack the boys who travel the maze for answers. Then a girl arrives in the lift; girls have never been sent before. With her, they realize they must find a way out of the maze or they will die. This action-packed adventure is one of my library's most popular dystopian series, especially with recent movie.

Sythe by Neal Shusterman
Neal Shusterman's stunning novel, Scythe, is set in future world where they have cured death. If you get a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis, they can cure you. If you get hit by a bus, they can put you back together. Whatever happens, they can bring you back. Of course, with no one dying and everyone having babies, the world would quickly become overpopulated. Therefore, the world's leaders came together and created scythes. These are people who decide who is to be killed and not brought back. The scythe's live by a set of commandments very different from our own. #1: Thou shalt kill. #2: Thou shalt kill with no bias, bigotry, or malice aforethought. #3: Thou shalt grant an annum of immunity to the beloved of those who accept your coming. (This means if you do not resist your death, your family will have one year of protection from death.) #4. Thou shalt kill the beloved of those who resist. (If you fight death, the scythes will kill you and all you love.) This is the story of teens who have been chosen to be trained as scythes. As they get deeper in their training, they discover that when humans play god, bad things happen. I read this book over a year ago, and somehow, I never blogged about it even though it was one of the best books I had read in ages. Shusterman is the Willy Wonka of the teen literature world as he creates innovative plots in a world where there tends to be a lot of repetition. Prepare to be shocked and spellbound as you are sucked into this futuristic world where getting our greatest wish, a freedom from death, causes even greater suffering. The sequel, Thunderhead, was just published, and it has received rave reviews from my students. My students devour Scythe like candy and beg for more. I join them in saying, "Neal Shusterman, please, please keep writing your amazing novels!" Highly recommended!
