After his girlfriend Annie moved to England, Leon moved from being a gifted prankster to an indifferent slacker who may not be able to graduate. When he discovers that she might be coming back, he knows she won't be impressed with his current life and asks his best friend Stan, who may or may not be Satan, for advice. Stan/Satan and Leon have been best friends since childhood, and Stan/Satan has demonstrated many times that he knows answers to seemingly impossible problems. Therefore, when Stan/Satan advises him that listening to Moby Dick, locating a white grape slushie, and dating the popular Paige will help him win back his love, he agrees even though the tasks seem insane. Watching this slacker get his groove back is hilarious. Leon and his slacker friends are a crazy crew, and the first chapter had me guffawing as we are introduced to the mysterious Stan/Satan. Selzer, like Stan/Satan, is able to take a myriad of crazy ideas and turn them into something you never expected, and the ending of this book was unexpectedly brilliant. This a fantastic choice for guys looking for a book that makes them laugh.

Racing Savannah by Miranda Kenneally The son who is learning to run his father's large horse farm, Jack lives in the estate house. The daughter of a horse trainer, Savannah lives with the help. Neither of their parents want them to be friends, and anything more is unthinkable. With the intervention of a spirited horse named Star, Jack and Savannah meet. Having to hide their growing attraction, they work together as Savannah trains to race Star, Jack's talented but unpredictable horse. When they lose control of their emotions, Savannah believes Jack must love her enough to tell the world. Instead, he tries to keep their relationship a secret. If Savannah wants the future of her dreams, she is going to have to fight for respect as a rare female jockey and for herself in realizing she should never have to prove herself worthy of love. You don't have to be a fan of horse racing to speed through this fast-paced romance. Although I felt Savannah was a bit too trusting at times, she was spunky and fought for herself, her family, and her dreams. Moreover, the ending is definitely swoon-worthy. Searching for Beautiful by Nyrae Dawn The combination of her mother's death, her boyfriend's betrayal, and her miscarriage created a typhoon of destruction on Brynn's life. As Brynn and Christian become friends, Brynn is terrified of letting their relationship get more serious and getting her heart broken once again. However, if she wants to find the beauty in life again, she must take a chance. Students will appreciate Dawn's honest portrayal of a girl struggling with a lot of heavy burdens who finds a way to feel beautiful again. The romance with Christian will make hearts melt. Romance fans will be pleased. The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson If you have been looking for a new supernatural love story that will not disappoint, pick up The Kiss of Deception. Refusing to have a loveless marriage like her parents and be controlled by powerful and rigid priests, Princess Lia flees her wedding day to an unknown prince from a neighboring country. She starts over in a small village working as a simple barmaid and enjoys living without restrictions. What she does not realize is that she is being hunted. Her father has sent bounty hunters to retrieve her. Her jilted prince is hunting her down, and an assassin from a different country has been sent to kill her. Both boys find that the princess is not who they expected her to be, and each must what to do as this brave young girl takes root in their hearts. Told from perspectives of Lia, the prince, and the assassin, this book is filled with fantastic twists, sigh-worthy romance, and brave heroes and heroines. It is the first in a planned trilogy, and I can't wait to read the next installment. It is one of those books that you never know what new secrets will be unearthed. I highly recommend it. Firebug by Lish McBride Ava is a firebug, a person who can start fires with her mind. She could deal with this better if she was not owned by the Coterie, a mafia-like group of magical creatures, and used as a hitman. This especially burns because she is forced to work for Venus, the vampire responsible for her mother's death. Unfortunately, saying no to the Coterie means a torturous death for you and those close to you, so Ava can't escape. When the Coterie ask her to take out a close family friend, Ava rebels. As she and her unusual group of friends (a werefox, a half-dryad, a golem-maker, and some nasty werehares) struggle to stay a step ahead of the Coterie, the price of Ava's freedom may cost her more than she is willing to accept. This new novel from Lish McBride, the author of the cult-hit Hold Me Closer, Necromancer, will please her fans. It is set in the same world as her first books but it another part of the country. Readers can only hope that Ava will eventually meet up with Sam and his crew. The same sarcastic banter is there as is the original cast of characters that you wish were your friends. The only thing I disliked about the book was its abrupt ending; I can only hope that there will be another book to resolve more of Ava's issues, especially her love life. This new supernatural book will set you on fire and make you ask for more! Love and Other Foreign Words by Erin McCahan High school senior, college student, best friend, loving sister, and genius: Josie is a girl who knows how to succeed in the world around her. When Josie decides her sister's fiance is completely wrong for her, she vows to do whatever she can to break off the engagement. When Josie's sister challenges her that she does not know what love is, Josie dates a boy she likes, falls for her college professor, and starts to discover the meaning of the word love. Love leads Josie to somewhere she never expected, and because of it, her senior year is going to be amazing. Erin McCahan's first book is a delight. Josie is laugh-out-loud funny as she gets creative trying to break up her sister from her annoying fiance. Readers will support her hi-jinks because they know that she is doing everything out of a deep love and protectiveness for her sister. Josie's family is warm, quirky, and loud, and as a reader, you wish you were one of Josie's fabulous sisters in this close-knit clan. It is also sweet watching this uber-smart girl realize she is completely clueless in matters of the human heart. This is a perfect romance to make you laugh, smile, sniff, and sigh. Highly recommended. I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson Jude and Noah. Noah and Jude. These twins are two halves of one soul, always knowing each others thoughts, always having each others backs. Then year thirteen happened, and the crash that took away their mother and their own cruel secrets tear them apart. Told by Noah at age 13 (pre-disaster) and Jude age 16 (post-disaster), this is a story of humiliation, survival, healing, and hope. It is a story about the power of love, art, and family to make us whole again. Fans of Fault in Our Stars and Eleanor and Park will fall in love all over again. I know I did. This is one of those books that gets better with each page, and by the end, you know you have your hands on a treasure. As you get to know Noah, a tortured boy dreaming of becoming an artist and Jude, struggling to move beyond the betrayals of her past, your heart will break and eventually, soar. Nelson writes in the book that "You have to see miracles for there to be miracles." This book is a miracle! |
