The Aliens are Attacking - The Best sci-Fi reads
The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
When the aliens came, they weren't as we planned. They weren't green martians with glassy black eyes flying around in disk-like ships, and they definitely weren't gentle and homely like ET. These invaders turned our world against us, wore our skin to deceive us, and left us decimated and unable to trust. As Cassie, one of the last free humans, struggles to stay alive and find her brother, the capable and mysterious Evan Walker arrives to help her survive a deadly attack. The more Cassie learns about him, she is certain she should not trust him, but her heart disagrees. When he promises to help her locate her brother, Cassie must decide if fear or hope will lead her. The action in this book is nonstop as you, like Cassis, are unsure of who to trust. This book looks to have the power of The Hunger Games, and fans of this series will devour this book. It is original and amazing!

Black Hole sun by David MaCinnis Gill
Black Hole Sun is for fan's of Joss Whedon's Firefly series. The sarcastic yet good-hearted Captain Durango leads a crew of quirky misfits. They may work for money, but they will give it up to do what is right. They would prefer the money and doing what's right, but that's not usually how the chips fall. This is a perfect choice for space western fans.

The same day as Kady Grant broke up with Ezra Mason, their planet is attacked. Only three ships of people survive the deadly attack. While fleeing their still-pursuing attackers, Kady and Ezra are shocked when one of their own ships, the Alexander, blows up one of the three ships, the Copernicus, neutralizing thousands of innocents. When administration on the remaining vessels refuse to explain the incident, Kady decides to take matters in her own hands. Using her computer skills, Kady starts to uncover the dark truth about the perpetrator of the incident and the terribly virus on board the Copernicus. Told in IM, video transcripts, hacked files, military documents, interviews, emails and reports, you learn how far Kady is willing to go uncover the truth and protect the lives of the remaining survivors. I loved the twists and turns of this innovatively told and bloody science fiction story. I felt like I was on board the ships as the survivors fought for their lives from the most unthinkable attackers. For me, the format of the book enhanced the book because I felt like I was one of people getting to the truth behind a horrific incident. It was fascinating, and once I got pulled into the mystery, I couldn't put the book down.

If you had a chance to travel through time, when would you visit? Would you want to see Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech," the building of pyramids, or watch one of Shakespeare's plays in the original Globe theatre? For us, these dreams of time travel will always be dreams, but for Farway Gaius McCarthy, it is his destiny. His mother was a famous time traveler, and Farway has spent his entire life dreaming of traveling through time. When the final test in his training is compromised, Farway's only chance of making his dreams a reality is to work in the black market, stealing priceless historical objects before they are lost or destroyed. When a routine mission turns into a disaster, Farway and his crew have to decide who to trust as time, once considered a constant, is now eroding history. This fast paced action story will pull you in its wormhole and not spit you out until you finished the last page. Like all great sci-fi stories, this features a phenomenal crew of fascinating characters, secret longings, witty dialogue, and cinematic action scenes. Great fun!

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
Goodreads writes, "Prentisstown isn't like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts in an overwhelming, never-ending stream of Noise. Just a month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd and his dog, Manchee -- whose thoughts Todd can hear too, whether he wants to or not -- stumble upon an area of complete silence. They find that in a town where privacy is impossible, something terrible has been hidden -- a secret so awful that Todd and Manchee must run for their lives. But how do you escape when your pursuers can hear your every thought?" This brilliant book is tough to sum up, and I don't feel I could do better than Goodreads in this instance. I will add that I love this dystopian trilogy as much as The Hunger Games. Written in Todd's uneducated vernacular, you learn of a dark world where nothing being secret has corrupted most men. Todd is the last innocent, but how long will that last as he is on the run for his life and fighting to protect the last bit of good in his world. I love how the print font changes as Todd experiences the "noise." Good and evil collide in a powerful series. Highly recommended.

ed Rising by PIerce Brown
For generations, humans have been working below the surface of Mars to make it habitable. Darrow and his family are Reds, proud miners who believe their short, poverty-stricken and dangerous lives are helping to rebuild humanity. Then Darrow's life is destroyed, and he learns that Mars has been built upon lives. Mars is habitable, and Golds, the ruling class, are living like gods while Darrow's people are left to suffer indefinitely. Darrow vows to change that and undergoes a terrible process to become a Gold, enter their ruling academy, and destroy them from within. This first novel from Pierce Brown was action-packed and thought-provoking. After terrible tragedy, Darrow is reborn like a phoenix from his former life. After Darrow gets into the Gold Academy, the true test of terror begins. The war games in Ender's Game have nothing on the brutality and brilliance of the Gold Academy. Darrow also struggles as he figures out how to become a winning, respected leader and must befriend the people he is trying to destroy. I cannot wait to read the next book, Golden Son, which is coming out in January, to find out what Darrow will do next to confound and amaze the Golds and who will join him in his quest for rebellion. HIghly recommended.
