"I'm physically incapable of saying no to a dare I've go the scars and broken bone count to prove it. And that fatal flaw, Bad Habit #1, is the reason I'm sitting in the car with my parents right now, listening to some small town radio DJ talk smack about me." Samantha (Sam) McKenna comes in from a military family where she is always expected to be a "good soldier." When her brother dares her to be part of the first girls to attend Denmark Military Academy, she agrees. Sam knows that life in a military academy will be mentally and physically challenging, especially considering most of the guys did not want her there, but the harsh treatment by her squad leader and some "training accidents" have made Sam worried that her life is in jeopardy. As Sam continues to excel, the secret society working to remove her will stop at nothing to get her out. In the McKenna family, giving up is not an option, and Sam must figure out who she can count on if she is to survive her first year as a cadet. As I was swept up into the world of a ruthless military academy, I was once again aware that I will never be a good soldier. I could not keep quiet under such extremely harsh and unfair treatment, and frankly, I don't think Sam should have either. With that said, I was on the edge of my seat reading the book as I struggled to figure out what they would do next to female recruits and who was responsible. I wanted to learn more about Sam's older brother and why he committed suicide. I also enjoyed the book's look at the dynamics of friendships and romantic relationships among soldiers. A fascinating mystery.

Half Wild by Sally Green For those of you dying to read the second installment of the Half Bad trilogy, you are now free. Half Wild was published on March 24th, and this second book met my every expectation. It is challenging to discuss this book without giving away too much. However, I can tell you that Nathan works to control his powerful gift. I will say that he agrees to work with an alliance of white and black witches who are working to destroy the hunters and allow all witches to live peacefully. I will also add that he meets with old friends and makes new friends and enemies. Of course, nothing goes as planned. That is not very specific, but if I say more, I truly feel you will lose the delicious and terrible surprises of the book. Once again, it was enthralling experiencing the world from Nathan's perspective, and I could not put this book down. The worst thing about reading it is that it is so spectacular most other books pale in comparison. If you still have not picked up book one, Half Bad, what are you waiting for? Now the wait for the final book begins. Cold Calls by Charles Benoit "I know your secret." a voice tells three teens. With their greatest secrets on the line, Eric, Shelly, and Fatima agree to tape themselves bullying a student that the caller has selected. If they don't do this on a specified day, their secrets will be leaked online for the world to see. Their attempts to me the callers demands land them in the same anti-bullying class, and they realize they are all being blackmailed into doing the same thing. Desperate to stop threats and keep their secrets safe, they decide to team together to figure out who the caller is, why he or she is doing this, and get the caller to stop harassing them. They have less than a week to figure it out, or their lives, and the lives of those around them, will be destroyed. I could not put down this new mystery by Benoit. Once the three teens meet, I could not wait to figure what were their secrets and how were they and the caller were connected. This is a fast and fantastic mystery. Little White Lies by Katie Vale After Lou catches sight of Christian running in the park, she decides to "accidentally" run into him. Quickly, she realizes that Christian has secrets. He dyes his hair, he won't talk about his past, and he can never go out at night. Then, as pranks against Christian escalate to deadly attacks, Lou helps him flee for his life. However, can she trust him? Lou herself is keeping secrets, and she will have to face them as she falls for this broken boy. Little White Lies is the best mystery I have read in a long time. I never knew what was going to happen next and who to trust or blame. Lou and Christian are complex characters, and I had to read the second half of the book nonstop because I had to find out what was really going on with both their stories. Who is Lou and what secret is she hiding from? Is Christian a good guy or a bad guy? I can't say more or I'll give away too much. Mystery fans are going to be enamored with this book. Highly recommended! Seeker by Arwen Elys Dayton Quinn has been training her whole life to become a Seeker. She has endured her brutal training because she believes as a Seeker she will be able to save people and make the world a better place. When she passes the initiation, she learns that everything her father taught her was a lie. He has turned the Seekers into terrifying assassins, and Quinn has no escape. How can she live with all the blood on her hands? How can she make right the wrongs committed by Seekers? This new fantasy offering has an intriguing premise. Seekers are a group of people who have the secret to traveling in time to make the world a better or worse place. I liked the idea of a girl trying to live for herself and make up for past mistakes. Quinn is idealistic and strong, and she has to fight hard to defeat her internal and outside demons. This book will make you think. |
