Andrew Brawley is hiding out from death. Ever since his life was spared in a crash that killed his entire family, Andrew has been living in the hospital trying to hide from his guilt and uncertain future. He works in the cafeteria, hangs out with the ER nurses, plays with the cancer patients, and visits his fake grandmother to avoid looking suspicious. When Rusty, a boy horribly burned by his own friends, shows up at the hospital, Andrew finally meets someone who makes him long for a future. However, he knows it is only a matter of time before he is caught. How did it take me so long to discover Hutchinson's brilliant writing? I was immediately drawn into Andrew's small world that he has created to deal with his endless grief and guilt. The relationships he has with everyone at the hospital are powerfully heartbreaking as you watch them all try to befriend a boy who is dying inside and as you watch Andrew to try to save everyone he has grown to love from death's inescapable reality. This is a phenomenal book!

When We Collided by Emery Lord Bipolar. Manic depressive. These are words to describe Vivi, but she doesn't want these words to define her. Escaping to a beach town to recover from the effects of her latest, losing fight with her manic depression, Vivi vows to live life to the fullest, even if that means she has to stop taking the medication that makes her head muddy. It also means that she doesn't hesitate to fall for the handsome Jonah, who is still reeling from the effects of his father's death on his family. As these two broken spirits collide, they bring each other to highest heights and the deepest lows. For both of them, this summer will change their lives forever. Like Vivi and Jonah could not stop themselves from falling in love, I could not stop myself from falling for this beautifully written book. Vivi is alternatively bursting with vivacity and joy or falling apart from sadness. Jonah's fight to save his family, himself, and Vivi is poignant and heartbreaking. Highly recommended! |
