When Cody gets an email from her best friend Meg informing her that she has completed suicide, Cody is shocked and devastated. She had no idea her friend was battling with depression, and she is struggling to move on without the girl who was her better half since they became friends in kindergarten. When Meg's parents ask Cody to clear out their daughter's belongings from her college apartment, she agrees to help, but what she finds there makes her uneasy. Meg's roommates experienced a very different version of her friend, and when she looks on Meg's computers, she finds files and messages that make her wonder if Meg's death was not all her own planning. As Cody struggles to find answers, she will test her own determination, strength and heart. I read this gem from Gayle Forman in a day. Like Cody, I was obsessed to find out why such a talented and popular girl would commit suicide. I loved the complex relationships Forman created between Cody and her mom and Meg's parents. I loved the hopefulness that pushes the reader to believe that they can be better than their past and that life is worth fighting for. Of course, I also appreciated Cody's confusing feelings for Ben, a boy who broke Meg's heart and is on the way to breaking hers. This is a life-affirming story that will keep your thinking. I loved it! It is definitely the best stand-alone title I have read so far in 2015.
